Tenants from Hell Beware
Councils are been given more powers to insure that licensing regulations on landlords are followed. The aim of this is to allow councils to impose stricter rules for landlords.
Landlords will no longer be able to accept tenants without checking their references first. If the tenants don’t have decent references they will not be given the keys for the property. The council will be introducing these schemes into areas that have older housing around the town.
Research has shown that 225 landlords have signed up to the pilot scheme. More than 100 future tenants were interviewed, which resulted in one in eight of those interviewed being rejected after failing to provide the correct or satisfactory references.
The voluntary licensing scheme is fully operational in some areas of the UK. The whole purpose of this scheme is to help private landlords raise the standards and reduce antisocial behaviour.
