Loud neon signs have been hoisted up onto the sides of let properties declaring tenants who have not paid their rent to the world and more crucially to future landlords.
The letting agent responsible for the new declarations in Dundee says they have been popular with other landlords and orders for signs have already been put in place. However, others see the move of 'naming and shaming' as backward step and charities like Shelter explain that many tenants are suffering with multiple money worries in the current recession.
However, letting agent Lease2keys explains that after landlord regulations were changed last April, they have exhausted all powers available to letting agents. The advice given by Elaine Stenson, from Lease2keys, to tenants suffering problems is to keep in contact with your landlords and not to avoid their attempts of communication via letter, telephone and doorbell!
As a last resort, other tenants and landlords condone the move to highlight rent dodgers as it's not fair on people who do pay rent and those property owners concerned.
Further problems arose when financial aid to assist rent payment started going directly to tenants rather than landlords; Stenson complains that tenants do not hand over the money needed for rent and hence the need for the new badges.
