Private residential landlord prosecuted by council
Rugby Borough council have taken out a second prosecution on a Private Residential landlord after ignoring 12 notices to improve the state of one of his properties.
In August 2007, he was fined £2,500 for the same prosecution, however following a recent inspection of the home, council officers had identified that further improvements had to be carried out to bring the property to a safe standard within a specified time period, but had failed to comply.
Under the housing Act 2004, the residential landlord was find £3,600 for failing to comply with improvement notices and ordered to pay £551 in costs.
Councils have powers to prosecute private landlords, and any action that needs to be taken will be recharged to the landlords if the standards of accommodation are not to a certain specification.
A spokesperson for Head of Environmental Services at Rugby Borough Council commented, “ Councils have a duty to protect residents and they want to work proactively with landlords to improve conditions with the private rented sector.”
