Not so handy Chinese takeaway
We all have nightmares about our house catching on fire and the belongings we value burning down to charred remains and that horrid sickening feeling when you know there's nothing you can do to stop the damage.
Its only natural then that many of us install protective measures to prevent fires in our home. However, inevitably there are some homes which are more at risk than others.
87 West Street in Boston comprised of a handy Chinese restaurant on the ground floor for the residents who rented the flat above the store. However, Wei Xian Peng, the landlord of number 87 was fined on the Monday 20, July as Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue deemed the property an exceptional fire risk.
The court heard that despite the property that was comprised of both residential and commercial uses it had only one staircase to escape the building in the event of a fire. Secondly neither the restaurant or the flat above were fitted with fire doors which can prolong the spread of fire for up to half an hour and no fire detection devices had been installed.
Peng was issued with a £3,000 fine and a prohibition notice restricting the use of the upstairs floor for working or sleeping potentially saving the lives of future unsuspecting tenants.
