New legislation a cause for concern
A new legislation has caused concern for landlords in the UK market, as it could mean landlords take on the responsibility of unpaid water bills that their tenants have failed to pay. Ever year tenants build up a total of around £500 million of unpaid water bills, which in the past where left unpaid, but should this legislation be approved then these bills could fall upon the landlords.
Perhaps the more disconcerting facts for residential property owners is that for all of these tenants that fail to pay their bills at this time the responsibility falls on us. We currently pay an additional £11 from our own monthly direct debits in order to help pay for the money lost by the water companies. The problem continues as water companies claim due to current legislation they cannot stop their service to the tenants and there is no way by which they can force the tenant to pay.
