Landlords registration system
In future landlords may find themselves having to register their details with a central landlord register every year, as part of a new registration scheme. The Rugg Review looked in detail into the rented sector last year and reported all findings to the Government.
The research and solutions that have come as a result of this review have been widely credited by landlords, which have seen their stock of rented property to housing in the UK rise from 8% to 13% in the past 30 years.
The review reported that as the rented sector grows so does the size of each landlords portfolio. Research also noted the vast amount of tenancies that lasted for only a short period of time, this was accredited to the lack of knowledge that some landlords had when faced with their responsibilities as a landlord.
It is this lack of or intent to ignore responsibility that has called for the central landlord registration facility. This will allow the Government to keep a closer eye on the current situation that landlords find themselves in.
