Landlords breaking the law by failing to register deposits

Statistics have revealed that Landlords are breaking the law by failing to register their tenant's deposits, leaving them at the risk of facing large fines.

The survey was carried out by The Deposit Protection Service (DPS), a Government accredited scheme of whom all landlords must register their deposits with, since the requirement was put in to place back in April 2007. Landlords who do not comply with the law may face large fines, and with the introduction of a national register of landlords they will have nowhere to hide.

The national register of landlords will be implemented by the DPS, so that all landlords across the country will be easily targeted if they fail to register their deposits; the good news is that the figures of those who have failed to do so this year has improved by 50% on last year, leaving the Government with news that more landlords are aware of the laws that they are breaking.

A separate register, for the landlords of England and Wales is currently being considered by the Government which will include the landlord's home address and the addresses of the properties that they are letting out, giving no means of escape for the rogue landlords.
