Landlord fined for failing to apply for licence
A Durham landlord has been fined £1,200 after failing to licence one of his multi-occupancy properties, which he was renting out to six students.
The landlord, who pleaded guilty in court to breaching the Housing Act 2004, was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £15 and £130 in costs.
Other properties are owned by the landlord which he has licences for, however on this occasion he failed to apply, even after warnings from the local council, leaving him with fines that could have been avoided.
As well as receiving fines for failing to apply for a licence, the tenants of the property are also considering to claim back the rent that they have paid.
