Landlord fined after failing to acquire legal license
A landlord has been ordered to pay £6,000 after failing to obtain a licence for one of his let properties in Salford. This is one of four other incidents where landlords have been fined after failing to acquire the correct licence in the UK.
Salford Magistrates Court found Adrian Petticrew guilty of not registering with the local councils selective licensing scheme. The scheme has been running in the area since 2007 and was originally put in place to help combat low demand and antisocial behaviour, as well as improving property management standards. The council will then assess whether the landlord passes the 'fit and proper' person test after they have submitted their management arrangements.
The court ordered Mr Petticrew to pay back the £6,256.15 he had received as Local Housing Allowance in the form of rent.
Since the court case Mr Petticrew has successfully obtained the legally required license, which will expire in 5 years.
