Landlord failed to service fire alarms
A landlord has been fined just £200 following the death of a tenant after he failed to maintain the fire alarms in one of his many properties.
The flat in Holbeck, Leeds set ablaze following a fire in the basement. The fire alarms failed to go off as they had not been properly maintained for some time, leaving a 45 year old tenant to pass away from smoke inhalation.
Prosecutors on the case could only issue Mr Turner with a maximum fine of £5,000, however due to his income, pleading guilty and full cooperation in the case he was only issued with a £200 fine; it is a legal requirement for any let property to have adequate smoke detectors which are maintained on a regular basis, although it cannot all be blamed upon the landlord if someone dies in the event of a fire.
