Landlord exposes nephew to monoxide emissions
Following a recent conviction of landlord Shazad Ishaq in Worcester after he failed to have his tenants boiler replaced causing the residents to suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning, many would hope that others would learn from his mistake.
It would appear not as callous landlord Ervin McKenzie managed to go one further. When he ignored advice given to him by industry professionals to have his tenant's fire checked, he manage to put his own resident 2 year old nephew to risk of carbon monoxide poisoning - a condition which can be severe in adults and fatal in small children.
The two bed house in Handel Street, Meltham was visited by Mohammed Tariq from the Kirklees council housing sector for a burst water pipe when he noted the trademark sooty marks building up around the fire. He warned the inhabitant, Jacqueline Clarke the landlord's sister, that she should not use the fire under any circumstance.
The lorry-driver landlord was also notified of the problem and under health and safety laws was obliged to have the fire checked and tested but chose to ignore his moral and legal obligations to do so putting his relatives at risk.
The court heard Clarke plead guilty to his lack of action, which was further worsened by the presence of his young nephew.
