HSE push for better awareness at farms
The Health and Safety Executive have continued their safety campaign across the UK by proceeding to the next stage, targeting farmers in Wales. The farming industry saw 38 workers die in 2009 in work related accidents and 2,435 people were seriously injured in the 08/09 period.
The campaign so far has been a success in Wales with around 1,300 farmers already signed up and the HSE are still pushing for more.
The HSE agriculture champion, Judith Donovan said: "For those 15,000 farmers we know have made the promise to come home safe, and the many more who may have made the pledge privately, the challenge for them now is to keep it, particularly when they're battling the weather or working to tight timescales. Losing concentration or taking seemingly harmless shortcuts is when horrific accidents can happen."
The agricultural employment rate holds only a 1.5% stake but this does not stop it accounting for 20% of the total number of death at work in the UK.
