Government proposal leads to landlord distress
Landlords across the UK are voicing their protests against the Governments new proposal to give tenants that receive local housing allowance the choice as to how they receive there money. Landlords fear that tenants that opt out of paying the money direct to the property owner may loose out on their rent as they feel that tenants will spend the money on themselves. A survey taken out by the Residential Landlords Association showed that 97% of landlords where against this proposal that has been tested since 2003.
The Residential Landlords Association chairman, Alan Ward said: "Nearly half of all landlords letting to LHA claimants are not prepared to carry on doing so. They just don't have the appetite for it any longer because they have been let down so often by the allowance payment system."
Figures have shown that in the past landlords that have requested direct payment to be made have been owed more than 8 weeks in rent arrears. It is figures like this that have caused such a high number of landlords to be up in arms about the proposal.
