Fire alarm appeal dismissed

Sarwain Ram had his buy-to-let property closed in Prospect Road, Lowestoft as the Waveney council deemed his house unsafe for human inhabitants. Since the closure, Ram has also had his appeal to re-open his house denied.

The Waveney Council stated that the let property was unfit for tenants, as there was no functioning fire alarm system in the property. Under UK legislation it is the landlord's obligation to provide reasonably practical fire safety measures for the protection of their tenants, this includes fire alarms.

However Ram appealed the courts decision to close his house arguing that any fire alarm installed by him would work from the tenants electricity supply; should the electric metre run short, the fire alarm would consequently stop working.

Ram's claims were dismissed at his trial and he was ordered to pay costs of an extra £4000 on top of his original fine of £12, 000.
